RCB champion!

2006/Week 39

A group of motivated youngsters have composed football teams in the neighbourhoods of Ouahigouya. Last Saturday they played the final of the organised championship. RCB (Racing Club of Bobossin) won: 2 to 1 against Arsenal. We were there, started the game, and handed out the trophies (in the name of Bibir). Village meeting

2006/Week 38

Sometimes we are sitting on the ground, sometimes they drag the school desks out of the classrooms. Men and women leave their work for what it is and assemble for a meeting. The chief or the delegate does the talking and animates his subjects. We listen and ask questions. They ask and want everything.

Millet, cereal of the Sahel

2006/Week 37

The millet is flowering: on the fields the panicles are waving in the wind. At the end of September, harvest time starts. The grains will be pounded or grinded to obtain flour. The women will prepare , the staple food on the country side: a solid mash that stays like a heavy load on your stomach.

Viim baore, granary of life

2006/Week 36

Arable farming in the Sahel is only possible during the rainy season from June till September. The cereals (mostly millet and sorghum) harvested in September or October serve as the main food for the rest of the year until the next harvest. The cereals - up to 1500 kilos for a small family - are being stored in special granaries as you see on the picture. These are mud constructions on pillars to avoid vermin and humidity to damage the harvest. The man as head of the family has the key to the door. It is his daily responsibility to give his wife what is needed to prepare the meals.
