Every cloud has a silver lining

2007/Week 26

The rainy season has finally started in the North of Burkina Faso. Upcoming rainstorms sometimes offer spectacular light scenes.

Clean water

2007/Week 25

Drinkable water is not only needed at pump level. Also water transport and conservation at home should happen in hygienic conditions. In Tangaye, about twenty people are being trained. They will be taking care of the maintenance and the management of the new water pumps in their village.

Rice from the Sourou valley

2007/Week 24

In the Sourou valley, peasants are reaping their rice harvest of the dry season. These women are threshing the rice by striking it against empty vessels. Per kilo of paddy rice, a farmer earns 100 F CFA (about 6 eurocents). To make ends meet he or she has to harvest at least 4 tons per hectare. Which is possible in Sourou. The valley has an enormous potential: 30,000 hectares can be set up for irrigated rice growing with 2 harvests a year. Nowadays only 900 hectares are used for that purpose. The import of cheap Asian rice of inferior quality is limiting the possibilities to invest in rice growing.

2007/Week 23

Last Saturday we were in Boulzoma, to visit Lassané, star of this year's campaign of Broederlijk Delen. We brought him the wishes of Belgian school kids.
