School? Peanuts!

2007/Week 42

Since October 1 all Kalizetas and Souleymanes are going back to school, as summer holidays have come to an end. Yet real fun didn't start: before besmirching paper or slate, the school field groundnuts must be harvested and dried. Benefits will sustain the school funds.

Voting

2007/Week 41

Noelie and Hamado, two trainers of Ocades, are leading a role play. They demonstrate how the village community can evaluate the committee of their water pump or well. This committee is responsible for the maintenance of the water infrastructure. Voting goes as follows: if you think the committee doesn't perform well on a certain issue put to the vote, then you put a pebble into the bowl. If the committee's performance is moderate, you put a cow pea. A good score is represented by a kernel of maize. Once everyone voted, we can start counting. Immediately everyone knows how the population appreciates its committee.

The crack

2007/Week 40

The pottery oven of Soulou has had some hard times during the rainy season. The cracks and holes have to be filled up as soon as possible. Women hands seal them with a new layer of clay.
