A roof over your head

2007/Week 39

The Peul are nomads who start settling down more and more. They do no longer follow their cattle in search for food and water, but lead a sedentary life in small villages. They have their cows in the shed, and feed them the hay that has been fetched at the end of the rainy season. The Peul's straw dwellings have been replaced by houses made of bricks.

Overflowing barrage lake

2007/Week 38

It rained that much the past months that the barrage lake near the town of Ouahigouya runs over since a few weeks - which didn't happen for five years. The groundwater level is rising continuously in the whole country : this means more drinking and irrigation water in the dry season.

Cats and dogs

2007/Week 37

Often it doesn't rain enough, sometimes it rains too much. It all started in the night of August 4 to 5, with more than 100 millimetres of precipitation, and ever since it didn't stop. The rain comes down in bucketfuls nearly every day, in and around Ouahigouya. Walls fall apart, fields are covered with water, roads get flooded, as here in the town's sector 2.

Casablanca

2007/Week 36

On the way back to Burkina Faso we made a stop over of two days in Moroccan Casablanca - a cosy cosmopolitan city. On the image you can see the arches of the huge Hassan II mosque.
